The Rhône River Centre is a non-profit organization (association law 1901), created in 1989 at the request of the City of Givors. The latter is an associate member of the board of trustees of the Rhône River Centre, along with the Pilat Regional Natural Park, the Union of communes Rhône Pluriel, and the University of Lyon 2. The Rhône-Alpes Region and the Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Culture are also called on as permanent consultants to the Board.

Several agreements have also been signed with the Ministry of Culture (national ethnopole label), the Rhône-Alpes Regional government, the city of Givors, University of Lyon 2 and soon the University Jean Monnet in St Etienne.

A 15-member team, six of whom are civil servants (cultural mediators, researchers, project leaders, an information officer and a general manager, along with administrative personnel), design and implement activities which promote the development of the river and its reappropriation by the general public, through numerous partnerships. The Centre has a consolidated annual budget of approximately 1M Euros.
